Gingerbread Mouse: A Christmas story

1 April 2010 No Comment

Of all my books, this is my favorite.  Making a gingerbread house was my inspiration for the book — after all, it is the perfect size for a mouse to move into when it’s cold and snowy outside.  Adding my own gingerbread cookie recipe was the icing on the…cookie I guess…oh, well, I got to bake and eat cookies while working on the pictures.

The title came first, then I had to think up a story. I love Christmas, and snow, and the ornaments on the tree, and the decorations and lights, so the story gave me an opportunity to show the family’s Christmas from the mouse’s point of view. Her tiny size gave me a great opportunity to contrast the concepts of big and little — very fun! Especially thinking of her hiding in the tree, looking like an ornament herself.

I am a shameless art supply hound – I like to make art out of everything, no matter how mundane.  This story gave me the chance to think like a mouse – how would I decorate the inside of a gingerbread house?  The interior designer in me went immediately to candy.  You may see pattern here ….yum… Christmas candy.

I hope you enjoy the book — and don’t forget to make the cookies!
