Frogs and Toads (Sticker Stories)

23 April 2010 No Comment

I have always loved stickers. This book is a crazy compilation of frog and toad stickers with varied habitat pages to place them in.  Frogs and toads come in so many wild shapes, sizes, and designs – many of them are so colorful they look like an artist painted them.  It was so much fun to select my favorite frogs and toads to include for the sticker illustrations.

Several lush background scenes are included in the book onto which kids can place the frogs and toads, and learn about different habitats.  The reusable stickers also look great on lunch boxes,  pencil holders, on the family refrigerator, or just about any flat surface that would benefit from having a nice little frog on it.

At first I found frogs somewhat difficult to sketch, as their shapes are so different from other critters I was accustomed to drawing.  Prior to this project,  my picture books had featured whimsical fuzzy animals ( often dressed in sweaters and hats ).  I had heard  it might be hard to get a frog or toad to pose for me,  so I found visual reference photographs in several books.  The photos made it much easier for me to familiarize myself with how real frogs and toads looked from different angles, and how they moved from place to place.  I  had to learn their basic structure for my drawings before I could start to paint the finished art.

As visual reference for drawing,  this sticker book could be a fun way for kids to learn how to draw frogs and toads as well.  By laying a sheet of tracing paper over favorite frogs or toads in the book,  and drawing an outline around them onto the tracing paper, they can see the simple shapes and angles and learn to draw their own characters, and paint them in crazy colors.  Maybe make up a story to go along with their art…
